The intuitive idea is that speed and safety pull in opposite directions: the slower and more carefully you move, the safer you are. On a multi-pitch route, that’s only true up to a point — and past that point, it stops being true.
Speed is also safety
A team that spends more time exposed on a route isn’t simply “taking its time” — it’s accumulating exposure to things it doesn’t control: weather turning, loose rock knocked down by another party above, fading daylight, fatigue building pitch after pitch. Moving efficiently reduces that exposure. This isn’t an opinion — it’s the reasoning behind most technical mountain training: the more fluency you have, the less time you spend exposed on each pitch.
But only up to the point your technical skill can actually support it
The mistake is assuming that relationship is a straight line — that faster is always better. It isn’t. There’s a point, different for every team and every skill level, past which speed stops adding safety through reduced exposure and starts removing it through a completely different mechanism: technical control simply can’t keep up. Past that point, you don’t fail because you moved too slowly — you fail because you skip a check, build an anchor worse than you actually know how to, or communicate badly because there’s no room left to do it properly.
Risk as a function of speed isn’t a straight line — it’s shaped like a U. Too slow, risk rises through exposure. Too fast for your technical level, risk rises again — through error. In between there’s a zone where risk is lowest: the speed your competence can support, no more, no less.
What this changes in practice
The practical consequence isn’t “always go slow” or “always push the pace” — it’s honestly identifying where a specific team sits on that curve, and working there. Teaching multi-pitch climbing, at its core, means shifting that curve’s turning point to the right: the more understanding a team has of the system — anchors, belaying, communication — the faster it can move without entering the error zone.
The problem usually isn’t moving slowly. The problem is not knowing which side of the curve you’re on.
